Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi says that we should lower the voting at to 16 at her weekly press conference earlier today.
@SpeakerPelosi: It’s “really important” to lower the voting age to 16. https://t.co/cnUxSds1T3
“I myself, personally, I’m not speaking for my caucus, I myself have always been for lowering the voting age to 16,” Pelosi said when asked by The Daily Caller about her thoughts on the issue. “I think it’s really important to capture kids when they’re in high school when they’re interested in all of this when they’re learning about government to be able to vote.”
There is so many things wrong with that idea. Let’s go over some of them.
1. Many high school kids don’t even have a job, let alone have any sort of responsibilities other than a phone bill. Their daily life basically consists of going to school, doing home work, and eating dinner someone else made for them. Oh, how I miss those stress-free days. Often, they don’t even think about consequences to their actions.
2. The average teenager’s brain is not fully matured until about 25 years of age. Meaning, high schoolers are hardly even half way developed. They lack proper decision making skills, risk assessment and even common knowledge. Many parents don’t trust their teens to borrow the car let alone cast a vote for President!
3. I have to give credit to @legalshieldtina on Twitter for pointing this one out. Allowing 16 year olds to vote would also allow them to serve on a jury. Would you really want a 16 year old making those kinds of decisions?
What about serving on a jury? Would you want a 16 year making that decision? Register voter are the ones that get picked for jury duty.

Personally I think the voting age should be lifted to 21. Voting is a privilege, and isn’t something that shouldn’t be played around with. It determines whether our country thrives or not, invade countries and start wars among many other very serious issues. Teenagers are more likely to vote for wild candidates that resemble them. Canadidates like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The newly elected congresswoman from New York. A nice talker, but knows absolutely nothing about how our government actually works. She’s demonstrated that time and time again.
Many teens couldn’t care less about politics. And I assume Pelosi’s thinking here is if we allow them to vote then they will start taking politics serious and get more involved. But this would be a dangerous experiment that I do not recommend.
Nancy Pelosi should be focusing on ensuring the integrity of our elections by getting stricter voter ID laws passed instead of trying to get minors to vote.
Also, I just want to make myself clear. I don’t think all teenagers are unintelligent or can’t make proper decisions. But many lack that capability. On the other hand, some teens are very bright and extremely responsible. Unfortunately, those are the minority.
